Abstract
An observation is described whihc suggests that the initial development of nitrate reductase activity in logarithmic-phase XD cells of tobacco is independent of nitrate. The cells can develop nitrate reductatse activity upon removal of the nitrogen source from the medium. The development of enzyme activity depends on RNA synthesis. The process seems to be analogous to derepression. Nitrate provides a positive feedback signal.
