abstract = "This paper is concerned with the structural optimization problem of minimizing the weight of a 2-bar truss subject to nonlinear stability constraints. Optimization problems for stability constraints are commonly handled as generalized eigenvalue problems with the resulting designs overestimating the buckling load by factors of up to 7.55. This paper presents an exact formulation that includes conditions for instability and optimality conditions in addition to optimal designs for symmetric and nonsymmetric cases using nonlinear programming. An extension to multimember trusses is derived.",
