Abstract

The effect of the requirement of local charge neutrality on persistent currents in normal mesoscopic rings is considered. The argument used in the case of global charge neutrality (canonical ensemble) is generalized to applyto local charge neutrality. The same result is then derived by treating theCoulomb interaction in the Kohn-Sham approach of density functionaltheory, using the local density approximation for the exchange-correlationterm.
