Abstract

An organic molecular system having three polymorphic forms, two of which were optically indistinguishable but have different mechanical properties was described. The crystallization of 6-chloro-2,4-dinitroaniline in layered structure of nearly parallel layers with alternating separations of 3.057 and 3.209 Å was shown. A batch of chunky crystals were grown along with needle-like morphology and corrugated crystal structure. It was found that one form of the compound was easily deformed under an applied mechanical shear force and other strongly resisted such force. On further X-ray analysis, it was also found that first form corresponded to the expected layer, but the second corresponded to yet another polymorphic form.
