note = "Funding Information: This volume is an attempt to bring together different traditions of research for the study of cross-cultural and intercultural self-help groups. Articles for this journal volume were selected from among the scientific presentations held at the International Conference on Self-Help/Mutual Aid in Ottawa in 1992. This international conference was the first of its kind and was organized by the Canadian Council of Social Development with the financial support of the Canadian Government. The conference was intended for people interested in self-help in the world and it favoured exchanges between members and representatives of various self-help associations. The conference organizers, Hector Balthazar and Ann Chud-leigh among others, had chosen to welcome diverse experiences identified as self-help. Although most of the presentations revolved around self-help groups, experiences of co-counselling, peer-counselling, or setting up collective resources were also described. Numerous testimonies from self-help group members as well as workshops given by self-help specialists likewise were fruitful learning experiences. During the conference, a research track that emphasized the research carried out in many countries was planned. As we have already pointed out, the research component used a more stringent definition of self-help groups.",
