N2 - To the Editor: In the June 25 issue, Dr. Janowitz stated that Crohn's disease was three to five times more common in Jews than in other people in Europe and the United States, but not as common among Jews in Israel.1 Indeed, there is convincing evidence that the disease is more prevalent in Jews than in non-Jews in Sweden,2 the United States,3 and South Africa.4 The prevalence rate of Crohn's disease in the Tel Aviv-Jaffa region of Israel5 has been reported to be 12.31 per 100,000 population — much lower than the rate among Jews in these other countries.
