Abstract
The long-term survival of neonates, infants and children with congenital heart defects has significantly improved in the last four decades due to the major advances in the diagnosis, operative capabilities, peri-operative management and long-term follow-up [1–3]. Advances in understanding the physiology and haemodynamics in the hours post complex cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery have helped progress the safe management of children in the postoperative period in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU).
