Abstract
We demonstrate the performances of pulsed and CW pumped Nd:YAG lasers, passively Q-switched with Cr4+: YAG saturable absorbers. Losses contributed by the active Cr4+ ions relate to their excited state absorption. Repetitive Q-switching of the CW pumped Nd:YAG laser was achieved for the first time, providing pulses 80-300 ns wide (FWHM) with repetition rates between 2 and 29 kHz. This laser is applicable where exact pulse timing is not required.
