Abstract
The quality of life of patients with chronic diseases is now recognized as an important factor to consider when planning and evaluating patient management. It should be the most important objective in the management of patients with any disease and particularly Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, with onset occurs in young people whose entire family, social and working lives lie ahead of them. It is recommended that some evaluation of quality of life be made at each visit to a patient suffering from inflammatory bowel disease. This is clearly difficult and time-consuming when the physician employs an extensive questionnaire designed primarily for use in research projects. However, shorter questionnaires should be useful in daily clinical practice. This is a new and rapidly developing field in medicine and much further progress is to be expected.
