Abstract

A model is proposed describing electrodialysis in a cell with ion-exchange fibres. The actual heterogeneous medium is replaced, with the aid of averaging, by a homogeneous one with three interacting phases, corresponding to anion- and cation-exchange fibres and to the bulk solution. The model is discussed qualitatively and the results of the numerical solution are presented. The case of non-ideal ion-exchange spacers is treated and the appropriate numerical results are presented.
