Remote sensing of suspended sediment along the southeastern Mediterranean coasts

Abstract

A few hundred Images of the southeastern Mediterranean which were produced by the NIMBUS-7 CZCS had been used to study the circulation pattern of the region. Among the goals of this research was the definition and understanding of the spectral properties of the marine environment. The optical model which was found to be suitable for estimating suspended sediment concentrations from CZCS data has the form of Xs = [Lu(550) - Lu(670)] a/[Lu(440)/Lu(550)]b, where Xs is the sediment retrieval variable and Lu is the upwelling radiance for the various wavelengths. This model meets the fundamental requirements of low sensitivity to both chlorophyll and atmospheric correction. Values of a = 1 and b = 1 were found to be the most relevant since the region is characterized by relatively high suspended sediments versus very low chlorophyll concentrations. -from Authors
