Abstract
Isolated thylakoid membranes have a high rate of ATP synthesis but only very low rates of ATP hydrolysis and Pi-ATP exchange [I]. Enhanced rates of ATP hydrolysis and Pi-ATP exchange can be obtained without affecting the rate of ATP synthesis by energization of the membranes in the presence of thiol reagents [2, 3].
