Abstract
Sand dunes are found in all continents and in all world climates. They cover approximately 20% of the world's arid and extremely arid zones but are also found in humid regions of North America and Europe and along most of the coasts of the world. In total they cover an area of more than 5 000 000 km 2, of which 99% is desert. Sand dunes appear in many different shapes as a result of the factors that form them, such as variability in wind direction, grain size, and vegetation cover.
