Abstract
The scavenging process is the most important factor controlling the efficiency and performance characteristics of a two-stroke-cycle engine. This article reviews and assesses experimental and theoretical methods, which have been applied during the past three decades, to evaluate the success of the scavenging process. Historical notes on the origin and early stages of development of the two-stroke-cycle engine are also presented.
