Abstract

The mechanism by which various sparks with different characteristics ignite a methane-air mixture, kept under thermodynamic conditions similar to those in an IC engine, was investigated. High speed Schlieren photography of the flame through optical windows at the channel side wall was used to study the mixture ignition and early flame propagation. Different methane-air mixtures (from lean to stoichiometric flammability limits) were ignited to establish a correlation between the required spark characteristics and the thermodynamic conditions of the mixture prior to ignition. Ignition delay times shape and trajectories of the flame front for different spark characteristics and initial conditions were derived. Original is an abstract.
