Abstract
The Mancos Shale outcrops extensively in the Upper Colorado basin and is a frequent source of sediment and also of saline water. Sediment and solute yield are shown to be related not only to runoff per unit area but also to slope steepness and length. Gentle slopes yield little saline material as the surface is leached; steeper slopes are not only eroded more rapidly but because they are incised by rills produce greater solute yields. -K.Clayton
