Abstract

The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the common notion that closed cylinders provide better residual magnetic field uniformity is not always true. In particular, it is shown that a properly designed open-ended double-shell axial cylindrical shield can provide better uniformity of the residual magnetic field than can be achieved with a similar but completely closed shield.
