Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the updated terminology: next-generation sequencing; amplicon sequencing; whole-genome sequencing; metagenomic sequencing; sequencing read; short-read sequencing (SRS); long-read sequencing; throughput; coverage; library preparation; adapters; barcode/tag/multiplexing; sequencing depth; quality score; paired-end reads; single-end read, and FASTQ. It examines the technologies currently in use for SRS. Illumina sequencing has been utilized for various clinical research applications, including outbreak detection and the exploration of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Additionally, Illumina offers a software suite that provides comprehensive data solutions facilitating genomics and clinical research from initiation to analysis. Avidity sequencing can be used for the same clinical applications as listed for Illumina. MGI Tech Co., Ltd. employs a sequencing technology known as DNA nanoball sequencing. The core concept involves amplifying small fragments of genomic DNA into DNA nanoballs.
