Abstract
Macroscopic governing equations, which were developed for prediction of the flow field in porous media, have been used to investigate the head-on collision of a planar shock wave with granular medium. The one-dimensional, unsteady version of these equations was solved numerically using a TVD-based numerical code. The numerical predictions were compared to the experimental results of Ben-Dor et al. [G. Ben-Dor, A. Britan, T. Elperin, O. Igra, J. Jiang, Experimental investigation of interaction between weak shock waves and granular material, Experiments in Fluids 22 (1997) 432-443] and good agreements were obtained. In addition, it was found that the prediction of the waves' velocities is much better than those accepted by Britan et al. [A. Britan, G. Ben-Dor, T. Elperin, O. Igra, J. Jiang, Gas filtration during the impact of week shock waves on granular layer, Int. J. Multiphase Flow 23 (3) (1997) 473-491.5].
