    Abstract

The structure, operation, and performance of silicon-based liquid crystal light valves - the photoactivated, CCD-addressed, and visible-to-IR converter - are described. The performance limitations of the readout structure, in particular those affecting resolution, sensitivity, contrast ratio, and speed, are discussed.
