Abstract
The teaching of many engineering courses relies heavily on the construction of mathematical models and their subsequent analysis. The paper discusses the danger that such models can become surrogates for reality. The teaching of fatigue in design courses is brought as an acute example. Fatigue of metals is an extremely complex phenomenon; its modelling for design purposes is fraught with danger.
