Abstract

The possibility of using dielectric microdisk resonators for the optical detection of single atoms trapped and cooled in magnetic micortraps was investigated. The bound and evanescent fields of optical whispering gallery modes were calculated. Finite-difference time-domain solutions of the Maxwell's equation were used for the purpose of analysis. Atom detection efficiencies and the feasibility of nondestructive measurements were discussed.
