Abstract
This paper presents schemes for transmitting (high level) messages by transferring cells from a sender to a receiver and back. Forward erasure correcting codes are used to cope with cell losses. Smooth transmission ensures that the delay of all transmitted cells is the same. Adaptive forward erasure correcting protocols change the number of redundant cells, used to cope with cell losses, automatically on the fly (in response to the performance of the connecting link/path). We present schemes that ensure smooth transmission when no losses occur and adaptive erasure correction when cells are frequently lost.
