Abstract

The solubility of several electrolytes in homogeneous mixtures of water-miscible organic solvent (acetone, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane and acetonitrile) was found to obey the equation S equals S//w exp( minus lambda f), where S//w and S are the solubilities in water and the mixture respectively, and f is the volume fraction (or mole fraction) of the organic solvent. This dependence can be explained assuming the additivity of the standard state chemical potential of the electrolyte in the mixture.
