Some reflections on Hernández and López’s reflections on the chain rule

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The author responds to an article about the application of the chain rule history to the didactics of calculus by Omar Hernández Rodríguez and Jorge M. López Fernández in the same issue. Particularly, they discussed how the chain rule was used by mathematician Guillaume L'Hôpital in the analysis of curves. He believes that one danger of historical mathematical thought is its influence on semiotics. He adds that they failed to mention L'Hôpital's concept of function.
