Abstract

Generally speaking, transmission line (TL) is a model for a distributed component supporting wave propagation in systems in which energy is delivered from 'sources' to 'loads'. As part of the overall system's design, TL's can also be considered as an effective means to manipulate the propagating wave-fields to achieve certain desired functionalities within a general 'wave engineering' framework. Such wave-field manipulations are implemented in, for example, TL filters, matching networks and as an integral part in nonreciprocal devices. Traditionally, a TL wave engineering for wave manipulations is applied within the paradigm of spatial-variation of its characteristic properties, i.e., different wave propagation velocity and characteristic impedance or alternatively inductance and capacitance per unit length in different sections of the TL, for example, for achieving load/source matching.
