Speed control of a dc motor by a phase-locked loop (PLL) is principally similar to phase-locked loop frequency synthesis. The differences are in the replacement of the voltage control oscillator by a dc motor and in speed (working frequencies). Therefore, it is possible to transfer more sophisticated algorithms, which are known and proved in the frequency synthesis field, to the field of dc motor speed control. A new frequency-synthesis technique, known as fractional-N, is proposed for speed control of a dc motor.
