Abstract
The stability of equilibria with a helical magnetic axis is studied. First, two families of equilibria whose applied fields have the same pitch as the magnetic axis are investigated. The two families differ from each other by the ordering of the physical variables with β. Then, the energy principle is used in order to check the stability properties of the equilibria. It is shown that low-β, low-shear systems with zero net current are stable for arbitrary values of the pressure if the deviation from straight magnetic axis is large enough.
