Abstract

Studies of the stability of unevenly aging rods with creep and concentrated and distributed loads have established the stability conditions over infinite time are independent of aging unevenness; it has been shown that the critical load under which a viscoelastic rod loses stability is lower than that of an elastic rod. Experimental stability studies, however, usually define longitudinal displacements of rod ends in the test bench rather than measuring compressive forces. The present paper defines the rod stability conditions for given displacements of rod ends and arbitrary creep kernels. In particular, it is shown that the stability conditions in this situation are affected substantially by the unevenness of aging and that a viscoelastic rod can lose stability at displacements greater than the corresponding values for an elastic rod.
