Abstract
The well known streak camera technique was employed in order to investigate the regular reflection-Mach reflection transition phenomenon. Rather than employing the method with straight slits, curved slits were used. Using this modified technique, the accuracy in measuring the transition angle was highly improved. While Heilig (1969, 1978) and Itoh and Itaya (1979) reported maximum experimental errors in the order of 8 degree , the present method yields errors in the order of 0. 3 degree -1. 3 degree depending on whether the surface is concave or convex. This higher accuracy makes it possible to examine experimentally various theoretical transition criteria which yield results that are less than 8 degree apart.
