Abstract

The goal of the current research was to develop an in-situ technology to strengthen structural concrete elements using textile fabrics impregnated in cement-based material (TRC layers) in order to improve their resistance to impacts during extreme events. The benefits of using TRC systems for strengthening of concrete elements are due to their relatively low cost; superior bond between the TRC layer and the existing concrete element; fire and thermal durability; and simple handling and processing. Experimental program included concrete beams strengthened by cement impregnated alkali resistance (AR) glass fabric. The influences of concrete surface and TRC location as well as various cement-based matrices were studied. Impact tests were performed. Rough surface beams fully confined with the TRC layers observed the best performance mainly of energy absorption capacity and impuls values when using cement-based matrix with polymer additive. These may explained due to improve concrete-TRC bond strength. These properties emphasize the potential of textile reinforced concrete (TRC) in strengthening concrete elements for improved resistance to dynamic loads.
