The structure of the surface layers of metal governs the strengthening, weakening and fracture mechanisms during friction. Electron microscope and radiographic examination of body centred cubic and face centred cubic lattice metal structures (low carbon steel and copper) during friction conditions simulating various types of wear are reported. The frequenty observed inversion of wear resistance of materials is explained, with details of the predominant type of wear and criteria for structural evaluation of the wear resistance of materials.
