Structure of Shocks in Space Plasma

A collisionless shock is a multi-scale object. The fine structure of shocks is determined by non-adiabatic gyrophase dependent motion of ions. At the scale of several ion convective gyroradii the ion distributions begin to gyrotropize. At thse scales Rankine-Hugoniot relations are determined by gyrotropic but anisotropic distributions. Dynamics of the solar wind protons and of significantly superthermal populations differ substantially. In this presentation, we show our preliminary results addressing these issues. We perform test-particle analyses, validate them with full-PIC simulations, and compare with observational data.
