Abstract
This article considers the sequence of formation of a cellular structure on a frictional surface. The degree of disorientation of the cells increases as the surface is appraoched. A relationship is found between the surface structure and fatigue wear phenomena during friction. A physical criterion is proposed to characterise the existence of a region of normal wear.
