Sub-wavelength optical recording on chalcogenide glassy film

Abstract

Chalcogenide glassy films are suggested as a candidate for near-field nano-writing. Photo-induced changes in the transmission (photo-darkening) of AsSe chalcogenide glassy films, using cw as well as pulsed green light, was investigated. The sensitivity of this effect is up to 500 times greater using single pulse (7 ns) illumination as compared to low power cw exposures. A 25% reduction of transmission using one pulse, at an energy flux achievable in the near field, makes this medium a good candidate for nano-writing. Recording of 125 nm-width lines is shown using cw illumination.
