Abstract

Mucormycosis and other specific opportunistic fungi cause invasive, life-threatening infections of the nose and paranasal sinuses, usually in immunocompromized hosts. This fulminent process quickly invades the orbit and anterior cranial base. We describe the successful application of the extended subcranial approach to the anterior skull base for access and extirpation of this often lethal fungal infection in 3 patients. This surgical technique may be applied to advanced infectious processes of the anterior skull base in combination with specific antimycrobial medication without gross disfigurement of the patient and with a greater chance of recovery.
