Abstract

The 6.324 MeV level of 15N was photoexcited by a chance energy overlap with a γ-line obtained from the Cr(n,γ) reaction using thermal neutrons. By measuring the angular distribution of the scattered radiation and its polarization, the spin and parity of the level was determined to be Jπ = 3 2-. The E2/MI mixing ratio of the 3 2-→ 1 2- ground-state transition was unambigously determined to be x(E2/M1) = 0.137 ±0.005. An upper limit to the branching ratio of the decay of the level to lower lying levels in 15N was obtained. The radiative width of the level was also measured and found to be Γ = 3.1±0.3 eV. The result is compared with theoretical predictions.
