Abstract

The Appendix is a shaped-charge jet section that is located between the end of the tail of the coherent jet and the slug. This section was named by us first as the Appendix in a previous paper [1]. It is a slow part of the shaped charge jet that is no more coherent but looks in X-Ray photographs like a series of particles that follows the coherent jet tail. Examining X-Ray pictures as well as numerical analysis results [2], it was found that the change from coherent jet formation into the formation of the Appendix occurs when the liner collapse angle passes 90. Analysis of many experimental results, including the five experiments carried out by Chanteret and Lichtenberger [3], reveals that this criterion is indeed accurate. The explanation of the mechanism giving rise to this section of the jet and its practical importance is presented.
