Abstract
Three modes of the response of a web plate loaded in shear are identified. (i) the mode where the shear force is sustained by a uniformly distributed shear stress at the boundaries of the web, (ii) the mode where it is sustained by nonlinear distribution of shear stress at the boundaries, and (iii) the mode where a tensile band is developed. The shear forces and the deformation of the web plate at every mode is studied. Experimental observations of the behaviour of aluminium web plates confirm the proposed model.
