Abstract
An expression, based on Owen's recent work on bound state Compton scattering, is derived from the Compton profile. The profile for a hydrogen-like atom is calculated with and without binding and "off-mass-shell" corrections. From this, we find that ignoring these corrections for photons scattered in the forward directions from electrons in high-Z atoms distorts and extends the low-energy part of the profile. Furthermore, these uncorrected profiles have secondary maxima which contribute a large spurious amount to the calculated cross section.
