The Concept of Holiness and the Requirements of Purity in Second Temple and Tannaic Literature

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This paper explores the evolution of the concept of holiness from its Biblical roots to its later development in Second Temple, rabbinic, and Christian thought. I will deal with who is holy, what is holy and what the concomitant requirements of ritual purity are. I admit at the outset that I have set myself no easy task. Neither the Bible nor the Second Temple literature are homogeneous by any means. First I will outline the Biblical views of the questions. Then I will examine the Book of Jubilees as a representative of a Second Temple period stream of thought. I will conclude by comparing Jubilees with early Christianity on the one hand and with rabbinic thought on the other.
