Abstract
It is shown that the boundary conditions corresponding to an insulating boundary follow as the "natural" boundary conditions resulting from minimization of the plasma energy without specifying the type of boundary. This property has the implication that the linearized fluid evolution equations are self-adjoint. It also makes possible the derivation of a necessary condition for stability against "interchange" modes, even though the magnetic field lines are not closed.
