Abstract
Dipole autocorrelation functions are calculated for the gas-phase N2Ar system using an anisotropic potential, V0(r) + V2 (r) P2 (cos γ) + V4(r) P4 (cos γ), and two isotropic potentials, V0(r) and V0(r) + V2(r) + V4(r). It is found that even the mild anisotropy of this system changes the shape of the correlation function. It also changes considerably the spectral intensity. It is further found that the two isotropic potentials produce correlation functions which, though different in magnitude, are identical in shape. This implies that neglect of anisotropy cannot be compensated for by adjustment of the isotropic part of the potential.
