Abstract

The performance of oxidation ponds and the quality of their effluents is usually defined and evaluated in terms of high or low BOD. The work described here shows that this does not always give a complete picture, because high ammonia concentrations might lead to anoxic conditions in the pond inspite of low BOD of the water.
