Abstract
Esther fainting before King Ahasuerus represents one of the most popular scenes in Mannerist and Baroque art. What were the origins of this story and why did it become such a favorite subject? The article proposes an original interpretation of the motif of the fainting Esther in light of contemporary modifications in female dress.
