Abstract
The Μfocus marker in Modern Hebrew will be analyzed from a sign-oriented perspective with regard to its paradigmatic and syntagmatic distribution in (a) selected "existential" paradigms, (b) as an alternative kind of "object marker" in complex "verb phrases," and (c) from the point of view of its appearance and/or nonappearance with regard to the categories of "person " and "number." A direct connection between the extralinguistic substance of the message being communicated and its iconic reflection in the order of the linguistic signs and their appearance and/or nonappearance in pronominal paradigms will be discussed in particular.
