    Abstract

    Obesity affects maternal health through every stage of pregnancy, from conception to postpartum weight reten tion. This chapter covers the primary complications that interfere with the optimal health status of obese preg nant women, including infertility, hypertensive disorders, diabetes mellitus, cesarean delivery risks, and thromboem-bolic disease. By understanding the special challenges and risks that present during the pregnancy of obese women, healthcare providers can maximize quality of care and help close the gap in adverse outcomes compared with women of normal weight.
