Abstract

The present work considers the importance of the transverse or non-axial fibre properties in determining the in-plane elastic behaviour of a paper sheet. Network models have long been used in considering the relationship between the mechanical behaviour od paper on the one hand,a nd the properties of the fibres which constitute the sheet and sheet structure on the other hand. It is shown that discrepancies between experimental results and the predictions of netweork models may be explanined by incorporation of tranverse fibre properties while maintaining the basic assumption of uniform strain throughout the sheet.
