Abstract

The authors report their experience with laparoscopy in adnexal pathologic conditions in adolescent girls. Over 4 years, 16 girls underwent laparoscopic procedures for various ovarian conditions. Seven girls underwent detorsion of twisted adnexa and resection of associated cysts. Seven patients underwent ovarian cystectomy: five for functional cyst, one for a huge hemorrhagic cyst, and one for a dermoid cyst. Two patients diagnosed previously as suffering from XO/XY mixed gonadal dysgenesis underwent laparoscopic gonadectomy of their streak gonads. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were encountered. Laparoscopic surgery is suitable for the treatment of adnexal pathologic conditions in children and adolescents: the hospitalization is short, the cosmetic results are excellent, and the return to normal activity is rapid.
