N2 - W-Cr-Pd alloys exhibit good oxidation resistance at high temperatures, as was first reported by Evans in the 1968 Plansee Seminar. Therefore they are potential candidates for solar receivers in air for solar thermal power plants which are promising sources of sustainable energy. The oxidation rate of P/M W-(20-30%)Cr-(0-1%)Pd (wt%) alloys was measured in air between 500-1250°C and was found to be 8.3·10-3mg/cm2h at 1250°C for 70W-29Cr-1Pd alloy. This oxidation rate is 10,000 times lower compared to pure tungsten due to enhanced diffusion and oxidation of Cr at the free surface. The oxidation resistance is decreased at 1000°C, but can be improved by pre-treatment in air. SEM/EDS and XPS composition profiles and XRD results provide insight on the contribution of palladium and chromium to the oxidation resistance.
